just for this moment
I
Our friends took us to a Cornish Cove
where we clamboured down the craggy cliff
to scoff freshly baked cheesy scones at the shore.
The children grew to fill the space,
circling through caves,
racing the breaking surf;
and there was
enormous writing,
colossal drawing,
fantasy fighting,
rock pool exploring
with the wooden sword
(which was perfect for pretend pirates).
II
Then,
just for this moment,
they stopped and stared
at the almighty expansive sea
sending wave after wave back and forth.
Just for this moment,
they were swelled to silence.
III
Not long after, we spotted the
Great Gorilla sitting, rock solid,
in quiet contemplation.
We pocketed pebbles
for future forays into the world of numbers.
Finally, as we made to leave,
the sun burst through the clouds,
shrouding us in warmth;
reminding us
that it never goes away.
It just hides.
